ABOUT the TE ARA HURA
The Te Ara Hura trail is a stunning walking track around Waiheke Island. Te Ara Hura means ‘Discover the Way’ and that is surely what you will do, seeing the real Waiheke, one step at a time.
This walk is a fabulous multi-day walk that encompasses the best of Waiheke Island scenery, character, landscape and food & wine.
For those with time, we recommend the full (nearly) 100km version.
Day 1. Matiatia ferry terminal to Onetangi. 20km. A day to start discovering Waiheke Island, from the fabulous coastal headlands with million dollar views, the picturesque beaches dotted with quirky, and quaint baches (beach houses) that give Waiheke its magical character.
Day 2. Onetangi to Passage Rock or Orapiu. 21km or 26km including via Stony Batter. A big skies day. Huge vistas, stunning coastal farms, rural, untouched and very, very New Zealand.
Day 3. Passage Rock to Rocky Bay. 16km of spectacular bush and coast trails including some challenges. Venture through the forest heart of the island with lush native bush, regenerating forests, streams, wetlands and birdlife aplenty.
Day 4. Rocky Bay to Blackpool Beach. 19km of discovering the backyards, wetlands and beauty of the southern side of Waiheke.
Day 5. Blackpool to Matiatia. The final 13km with oceanside trails and the stunning coastal headlands and world-class wineries.
The fine print
To complete the trail in 5 days involves 6-8 hours per day walking to cover 13-26km per day. The elevations are varied but it is all quite hilly (with beautiful views)! The highest point on the island is Mt Maunganui at 230m but when walking the entire track you will cover close to 3000m of ascent over the 85km.
With iWalkWaiheke, we can be very flexible with how far you walk each day, as we offer a pick up from where you get to!
