For a fantastic Waiheke experience join us for the WWW. Wild Walks & Wine showcases the best walking tracks on Waiheke and crosses paths with the best wineries on Waiheke. What a wonderful coincidence!
We meet at Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke Island and set out south around the beautiful coastal headlands toward Cable Bay, Church Bay, and Park Point. See some of Waiheke’s early Maori history and pass the coastal mansions of the present. Enjoy tranquil Te Wharau Bay beach before climbing up through the Pio Rehutai reserve to Mudbrick Winery. (Approximately 4 hours walking). Here enjoy a beautiful lunch platter and premium wine tasting and purchase wine for later if you choose. If you are feeling fit, continue on down through the bush and through the ‘suburb’ of Blackpool, around the stunning esplanade to Surfdale Beach and back through Oneroa village (optional 1.5 hours walking) or choose just to relax at Mudbrick Winery.
Arrive at your accommodation to relax and unwind, and then enjoy a fantastic Kiwi dinner experience, either a gourmet BBQ or delicious meal prepared by your very own chef.
Your day starts with a continental breakfast and free range eggs at home, then set off toward the end of Te Whau peninsula. We stop at Ringawera Bakery, NZ's only bilingual bakery - learn some Maori words and enjoy coffee and a fresh pastry (optional extras) overlooking this spectacular point of the island. We follow along the beautiful trail through Kaukarau Bay and Omiha (Rocky Bay) to Whakanewha Regional Park, home to rare NZ Dotterels and other sea and wading birds. Hike up through the Island's forest heart, through the Nikau groves and cascades, and up toward Trig Hill, a high point and home of Peacock Sky Winery and Pukeatua reserve. Here enjoy a lovely picnic lunch from one of the best views on the island. You can choose to do the fabulous Peacock Sky wine tasting and relax in the vineyard for the afternoon, or continue walking down through the Forest and Bird reserve to the tranquil Kauri grove and stunning view point of Pohutakawa reserve. If we are lucky we will see or hear out famous Kaka bird. The walk ends as we hit stunning Onetangi Beach, and you may walk the beach or have a well deserved refreshment. This is a 4-4.5 hour walk. We will transport you back to Matiatia to catch a late afternoon ferry back to Downtown Auckland, or to your island accommodation if you are staying. Enquire with us about extending your visit and staying with us at our very own iWalkWaiheke guest house.
