Over a stunning 3 days we cover all the great walking tracks on the island, joining them together with rural roads and coastal farm tracks, and cross paths with everything from some of New Zealand’s rare birds, to our world class wineries. The walk is based around the Te Ara Hura 100km walking trail but without the long road sections. You will cover approximately 45km - 65km of the track, depending if you wish to do extra walks in the late afternoon.
Set out south around the beautiful coastal headlands toward Church Bay, Cable Bay and Park Point. Learn some of Waiheke’s early history and pass the coastal mansions of the present. Rest a while at tranquil Te Wharau Bay beach before climbing up through the Pio Rehutai reserve to the stunning Mudbrick Winery for a delicious lunch. (Approximately 4 hours walking). Enjoy the beautiful views, perhaps partake in their premium wine tastings and purchase wine for later if you choose. If you are feeling fit, continue on down through the bush and through the quaint suberb of Blackpool, around the stunning esplanade to Surfdale Beach and back through to Oneroa village (optional 1.5 hours walking), or choose just to relax at Mudbrick Winery for the afternoon.
Arrive at your accommodation to refresh and unwind, and then enjoy a fantastic gourmet BBQ prepared by your very own chef!
Enjoy a continental breakfast and free range eggs at home before setting out toward Te Whau peninsula and Ringawera Bakery, NZ's only bilingual bakery – learn some Maori words over coffee and a fresh pastry overlooking this spectacular point of the island, and then follow this beautiful coastal track through Kaukarau Bay and Omiha Bay (Rocky Bay) to Whakanewha Regional Park, home to the rare NZ Dotterels. Hike through the Islands forest heart, through the Nikau groves and cascades, and up to Trig Hill, a high point and home of Peacock Sky Winery and the Batch Winery. Choose to do a wine tasting and purchase wine for later, and enjoy a lovely picnic lunch from one of the best views on the island. You could put your feet up and relax at the winery for the late afternoon, or continue down through the Forest and Bird reserve to the tranquil Kauri grove and stunning view point of Pohutakawa reserve. If we are lucky we will see or hear out famous Kaka bird. The walk ends as we hit stunning Onetangi Beach, and you may choose to walk the beach or have a well deserved refreshment at the locally loved cafe Charlie Farleys.
Arrive at your relaxing accommodation to refresh and then enjoy dinner with your walking companions in traditional Kiwi style - gourmet fish and chips on the beach or at a fun local eatery, weather dependent.
A fabulous day enjoying what locals call ‘The Bottom End’ – walking out toward the far-eastern end of the island. We set out from Trig Hill towards Awaawawaroa over coastal farmland and regenerating bush to take in stunning views as we descend into the valley and learn about the Eco village. This end of the island is mostly uninhabited, and we continue up and over to the Te Matuku Marine reserve area, and up the stunning east coast toward Cowes Bay. We make our way north to the world class Man O' War Winery for a relaxing late lunch at this stunning beachside location. (Approximately 3.5-4 hours walking).
We drive back to your accommodation following a little more of the Te Ara Hura walking track (we've avoid walking this part as it is mostly on the roads) and take you on a little mini tour from the far end back to where we began.
Here our adventure has come to an end and we bid you farewell, and will return you safely to the ferry or if you simply can't leave, we will take you to your accommodation so you can continue exploring more of the island on your own. Enquire with us about extending your visit and staying at our very own iWalkWaiheke guest house in Rocky Bay.
