1. Forests and Beaches (Full Day Walk)
We will meet you on the Island at the Matiatia Ferry Terminal or your accommodation at 9.40am and drive to the start of the Te Whau peninsula to begin the day walking along these glorious coastal tracks. We immerse ourselves into beautiful remnant forest of the Kuakarau Forest Park and we stop at Ringawera Bakery, NZ's only bilingual bakery – learn some Maori words and enjoy coffee and a fresh pastry (optional extras) overlooking this spectacular point of the island, then follow the Hitapa trail through to eclectic Omiha (Rocky Bay). We then enter into Whakanewha Regional Park, home to the rare NZ Dotterels, and many other shore birds who can be seen feeding and sometimes nesting along the shore. In one of the best picnic spots on the Island we enjoy a lovely picnic lunch under the giant Pohutakawa trees. We hike through the Islands forest heart, through Nikau groves and regenerating canopy and return along the ridge above Rangihoua. On the return drive to the ferry we will show you the stunning Onetangi Beach, and drive along the beaches and baches of the Northern coast to return to your ferry. This is approximately 4 hours walk, plus lunch stop and mini tour of the Island. Transport is included back to Matiatia at approximately 4pm for the 4.15pm ferry.
Your experienced guide, transport to walk start point and return to ferry or your accommodation, and a delicious picnic lunch. Not included are ferry tickets to/from Waiheke, and other food or drinks purchased at the cafes and wineries.
2. Coastal Classic to Mudbrick Winery (Half Day Walk)
We meet you at Matiatia Ferry Terminal and commence our walk around the stunning coastal trail and headlands toward Church Bay, Cable Bay and Park Point. Learn some of Waiheke’s early history and pass the coastal mansions of the present. Rest a while at tranquil Te Wharau Bay beach before climbing up through the beautiful native bush in Pio Rehutai reserve to the world-class Mudbrick Winery. This is approximately a 3 hour walk. We leave you at Mudbrick to soak up the views and fine wine and service, and enjoy a delicious gourmet platter if you fancy it. In your own time you can return to the ferry which is a scenic 25 minute walk or short taxi ride.
Your experienced guide, and a fun, informative walk.
Not included are ferry tickets to/from Waiheke, onward transport from Mudbrick, or food and drinks at the winery.
